Ancient period

The indigenous inhabitants of the North American continent  (the Indians) lived on the territory of modern North Carolina for millennia. About the year 1000 of our era most of the Indian peoples of the state belonged to the “Mississippian culture”, also known as “the builders of the mounds”. To the present day preserved mound town Creek, around which approximately 1150 – 1400 years there was a permanent settlement. Archaeological studies that have been conducted for more than fifty years have helped scientists learn a lot about the life of Indians. In 1966 town Creek was designated as a National Historic place.

By the time the first European explorers in North Carolina lived Indian people Pamlico, Roanoke (on the coast) the Tuscarora, Catawba, Cherokee, and others.

14 – 16 centuries

In the spring of 1585 five ships with settlers went in America, whose task was the establishment of a permanent settlement. In August, about a hundred of colonists headed by Ralph Lane were landed on Roanoke Island and brought their ships went home. It was planned that in April next year the ships will return bringing food and new immigrants, but the ships didn’t do that. The provision was ending and the situation was even more complicated by the constant clashes with the Indians. Fortunately, ships of the famous Explorer and privateer sir Francis Drake passed by Roanoke. He took the settlers and brought them to England. Supply ships arrived two weeks later, but the colony has been already abandoned.

In the middle of the XVIII century, the population of North Carolina increased sharply (about 30,000 inhabitants in 1730, 100 000 – in the year 1752, and about 200,000 in 1765), on the eve of the American Revolution it was the fastest growing among all the English colonies in North America.
